Membership Information

The North Alabama Railroad Museum (NARM) began life in 1966. In the early days, NARM rallied around its own steam locomotive No. 77 and after much hard work it was used to power several mainline excursions. For over two decades, NARM sponsored mainline railroad excursions (usually) to Chattanooga, Tennessee behind such wonderful steam locomotives as Southern No. 4501 and eventually N&W No. 1218. In the mid-eighties, the museum had the opportunity to purchase it's own railroad track and right-of-way, so NARM sold No. 77 as a way to finance the purchase.

Today, we provide train rides on our Mercury & Chase Railroad. Our museum continues to grow in scope and purpose. We are gladly accepting new members and invite any and all persons interested in trains and railroading to join. All that we ask is that you support the efforts of the museum and abide by its by-laws. We are community minded and strive to maintain good relationships with our neighbors. We have a wide diversity of members and you are sure to find your niche in our museum.

Members of NARM will receive a monthly newsletter, "White Flags and Full Steam", which is put together by members, for members. It's goal is to highlight the efforts of those involved and generally keep the readership up to date on all the current news and happenings. The membership meets on the last Thursday of the month (exceptions made for holidays) for a dinner meeting usually at a local restaurant. These dinner meetings are open to the public and visitors are welcome. NARM has regular work sessions on Saturday and Wednesday mornings. Again, visitors are welcome but only members may perform work (due to liability reasons). NARM has business meetings on the first and third Mondays of the month, however, these meetings are open to members only.

NARM is a chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) . Each NRHS member receives the NATIONAL RAILWAY BULLETIN every other month. With articles, photos and news of railroading past and present, the BULLETIN is recognized as a leading rail historical publication. One issue each year is devoted to documenting the many activities of the local chapters. NARM also belongs to the Tourist Railway Association , Inc. (TRAIN). We support the objectives of Operation Lifesaver and have several members who have taken the Operation Lifesaver class. Members of our museum also were involved in teaching Continuing Education classes at the University of Alabama in Huntsville . These are just some of our activities and affiliations. Below you will find dues information. We need new members and hope you will join us in preserving rail history.
